Before They Grow Up: Photographing Childhood – Click Photo School {Jill Kirtland Photography – Mid Ohio Valley Photographer}

During the months of January – March I usually take on fewer client sessions so I can focus on professional development. I believe the key to being a great photographer is to do continuous education so I can learn from other great photographers, gather inspiration from practicing other styles of photography, and to push my creative boundaries.

I just wrapped up the four-week online course “Before They Grow Up: Photographing Childhood” from Click Photo School‘s instructor and mentor, Kellie Bieser of Shutter & Glass Photography (Columbus, Ohio). It was a really inspiring class. I love Kellie’s work and was interested in seeing how she achieved her family and child photography. She loves doing a mix of portraits and lifestyle/documentary photos during her client sessions and personal work. I also love learning from someone who lives in a world of beautiful chaos like I do (she has 4 children and manages a business). This course took us through the art of traditional portraits to lifestyle portraits to documentary photography. Each of these can capture childhood in a special way. It helped you figure out where your comfort zone was and where you might want to develop yourself further. I also learned some great Adobe Photoshop techniques which encouraged me to unlock more of Photoshop’s potential (I primarily edit in Adobe Lightroom) and take another Click Photo School class (this time as study along instead of a full participant) on Unlocking the Magic of Photoshop.

There were people of all different skill levels varying from hobbyists to professionals in this class. I love how Kellie encouraged each of us and gave us such great constructive criticism during our weekly assignment critiques. There was also a lot of fun off-topic chatter happening in the course discussion forum!

Here are some photos I took of my children as practice exercises for the course:

Tell Your Family’s Story {Mid-Ohio Valley Lifestyle Photographer – Jill Kirtland Photography}

It may seem like an obscure investment to pay someone to come into your home and photograph your family as they go about their day-to-day activities, but think about it this way …Newborn Lifestyle Photography - Jill Kirtland Photography

  • Do you as the mom or dad get in the photos you take of your kids?
  • Do you take photos of the little things your kids do like play with their toys or eating their snacks or wrestling with their dad? Take photos of how your home or their bedrooms are at this stage in their life?
  • Do you capture the emotions of your family?
  • Are your photos blurry because you take them with your smartphone or a point & shoot camera?
  • Do you take photos in a storytelling way? Put them in an album?

These are all things that a lifestyle photographer does when she/he comes into your home for a couple hours. I fell in love with lifestyle photography a couple years ago. I always was a photographer who loved to capture emotions and high energy moments.   I love the little details and moments in my family’s life and wanted to capture that for other families.  I know I will never get those moments back. I know that when I look back at my photos I’ll wonder where I was or where my husband was.  Sure, we get tons of photos of the kids, but we’re never in the photos, or only just one of us.   I want to capture the authenticity of your home and your interactions…the good and the bad.  I love bringing those moments to life in photos for other families.  You can display your story on the wall of your home so much better than posed studio photos.

What does a lifestyle photo session get you when you book Jill Kirtland Photography?Lifestyle Family Photography - Jill Kirtland Photography

  • 1-2 hours in your home photographing the candid interactions of your family as you go about your day-to-day activities. I love capturing kids playing in their rooms or families spending time together in the kitchen or living/family room.  If it is a newborn lifestyle session, I spend a lot of time photographing your baby in his/her nursery and the parents/siblings interacting with the baby. It’s a great way to also include the pets!
  • 50-100 high resolution digital photos in a shareable web gallery (active for one year)
  • up to 50 printed 4×6 photos and all edited high resolution non-watermarked digital photos on a USB flash drive in a beautiful wooden box
  • Option to buy other prints (various sizes and mediums) or a photo album

Holiday Season Is Upon Us! {Mid-Ohio Valley Family Photographer – Jill Kirtland Photography}

Last weekend I photographed 3 families for holiday mini-sessions.  I did them early this year because I will be going out on maternity leave shortly. It has been a really fun year photographing so many Mid-Ohio Valley families and I wanted to end the year doing something fun to celebrate the upcoming holiday season.  I kept the props to a minimum because I wanted the focus to be the the sweet interactions between parents and kids.   Even my outdoor natural light photos have a lifestyle element to them – capturing the real moments.  Although these turned out a bit more posed than usual.  Next year I will offer them again and hope to get more participants!   Keep an eye on my Facebook page or this website to find out when I will be booking mini-sessions! I will be offering them for other holidays/seasons in 2017 (Easter, Mother’s Day, Independence Day, Back-to-School, and Fall/Christmas).

Back to School! {Mid-Ohio Valley Lifestyle & Event Photographer – Jill Kirtland Photography}

In August & September, I held a few dates for Back to School mini-sessions.  These were stylized 20 minute sessions with a vintage desk and other props.  I had 6 kids who came to get their photos taken.  These were great alternatives to the school photos or a great way to get a professional photo of your child’s “first day” of school.   I included a customized First Day of School sign from designer etsy shop MiniWheats that each child got to keep to remember that year.

I plan on offering these again next year around the same time (mid-August to early September) so if you want to be notified of when they are and how to book, please sign-up for my monthly newsletter!

LuLaRoe Fashion Shoot – Simply Comfortable {Mid Ohio Valley Lifestyle & Event Photographer – Jill Kirtland Photography}

I discovered LuLaRoe clothing a couple months ago when a long time friend started selling it. At first I was skeptical because it was just another direct marketing business one of my friends was trying to get me to try out and host a party. But I joined one of her online pop-up parties and bought a Lindsay kimona because I was looking for something I could wear while pregnant. It is a really beautiful cover-up and very stylish. I get a lot of compliments when I wear it. Then I bought some leggings off of another consultant. They were the softest most comfortable leggings I have ever worn! And I could wear them while pregnant, too. I was hooked!! The great thing about LuLaRoe is that every consultant gets different inventory so they are not really competing against each other. Not one consultant has the exact same print in the style or size you may want.

So when my new friend Ashley said she was becoming a LuLaRoe consultant, I thought it was a great opportunity to help her grow her business! I noticed some consultants did not have very good photos of the clothing worn by people to show how different shapes and sizes could wear it. Most would take photos on hangers, laid out on a bed or floor, on a mannequin or try to take ‘selfies’ while wearing it. Of course it is impossible to do a photo shoot with the hundreds of pieces that each consultant gets, but I thought these clothes deserved a better representation! I suggested that we gather together some ladies, including herself, and do a fashion shoot to showcase the different styles & prints on different people! I am so happy she was enthusiastic about the idea because when we did the photo shoot this past weekend it was a lot of fun and I got to meet some really great ladies. It was my first time doing a fashion shoot, so it was a great learning experience for me and I loved how we did it outdoors instead of in a studio. I hope to do more in the future and work with other fashion consultants for any clothing line!
